Behind the Curtain: The Inspiring Story of the Miller Theatre
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Mike Millsted, Chairman of the Miller Theatre, where we explored its creation, how it has grown over the years, and what makes it a standout destination for theatre lovers and the local community:
What inspired the creation of the Miller Theatre, and what sets it apart from other theatres in the area?
The Miller Centre (as it was originally called) was the creation of Michael and Christine Pilch in 1977. Michael and Christine had been active members of amateur dramatic groups in the area and at that time had established and run a charity that was focussed on assisting retired people to live an active, fruitful and fulfilling life. When the old St. John’s School building became available in the mid-seventies they saw an opportunity to combine their two main interests in one place. It is this that sets the Miller Theatre apart from other theatres, because it’s not just a theatre. It is a busy and vibrant hub for all manner of activities during daytimes and evenings. In addition, many of these activities contribute to the running of the theatre – set building and painting, costume repairs and bar and box office being examples.
Can you describe the history and evolution of the Miller Theatre? How has it grown over the years?
The site was originally converted in 1976-1977 and opened in October 1977 as a theatre seating 198 people. In addition, the public areas were used during the day for activities such as art groups, sewing groups, bridge clubs etc. The space at the back of the theatre (the old school playgrounds) were built on a couple of years later to provide the rehearsal studio which was also used as extra space for daytime activities such as folk dancing and keep fit. A couple of years after that another extension was built to house the set building workshop and the extensive collection of costumes. Since then, the premises have been continually updated and refurbished. The theatre in particular has regularly upgraded to the latest technical equipment making us the equal of many professional theatres.
What types of productions does the Miller Theatre typically stage? Are there any upcoming shows or events that audiences should be excited about?
The Miller Theatre stages a very wide range of productions so there is definitely something for everyone, with everything from family shows to Shakespeare, thrillers, comedies, classic drama and new writing. Our first two shows of the new season are particularly exciting with ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time’ opening the season followed by the gothic masterpiece that is ‘Frankenstein’. For a change of pace, in January we have the children’s classic ‘The Secret Garden’.
How does the Miller Theatre engage with the local community? Are there any outreach programmes or initiatives that you’re particularly proud of?
We are always keen to engage with the community as much as we can. We are very proud to be part of many ‘Caterham Valley for You’ initiatives such as the Halloween Trail and the Christmas window display. We’re particularly proud of our Youth Theatre Group which is popular with local youngsters who develop theatre skills in their time with us, and many have gone on to have successful careers in the profession. We run a bursary scheme whereby our youngsters who go on to study a theatre related subject at college/university can apply for grants towards the cost of their course.
Can you share any memorable or unique experiences that have occurred during performances at the Miller Theatre? Any funny mishaps or heart-warming moments you’d like to highlight?
Gosh, there’s probably too many to single out just one but fortunately most of the time it’s things the cast are aware of but the audience might not notice such as prop malfunctions, costume issues – that kind of thing. One thing does stick in my mind though. We are privileged to be invited to perform occasionally at the world famous Minack Theatre on the clifftops in Cornwall. During a performance of ‘Nell Gwynne’ a few years ago a major coastal search and rescue operation was launched which involved a large helicopter flying very low over the stage. The noise was tremendous and some of the cast were ad-libbing lines about ‘strange flying machines’ while it was passing over.
How does the Miller Theatre support and nurture local talent, both onstage and behind the scenes? Are there opportunities for aspiring actors, directors, and technicians to get involved?
The Miller Theatre is run by and for the local community. It is entirely voluntary and anyone can get involved. We have excellent directors and technical and backstage people who love to introduce people to what they do and train them up. So, if anyone wants to come and have a go then just turn up and introduce yourself and we can lead you in the right direction. I would suggest the best place to start is one of our open playreading evenings which are informal affairs with drinks and nibbles and a chance to chat to people and ask questions. We also have a regular ‘tech night’ for the lighting and sound teams which would be a good place to start for those who absolutely don’t want to act. Details are on the website.
Lastly, what are your aspirations for the future of the Miller Theatre? Any exciting plans or goals on the horizon that you can share with us?
Looking to the future we want the Miller Theatre to continue to be a beacon of excellence in amateur theatre. More than that however, we want it to continue to be a place where everyone can feel welcome, either during the daytime activities or in our productions, and meet new people and learn new skills. We do also have some plans to improve the facilities in the building and equip it to be a building suitable for the 21st century.
It’s clear that the theatre is more than just a place to enjoy a great show. It’s a vibrant community space where people connect, create, and collaborate. Whether you’re a seasoned theatre-goer, an aspiring performer, or just curious about the arts, the Miller Theatre has something unique to offer. We’re excited to see what’s next for this incredible venue, and we hope you are too!
