Uncover the History of Caterham Valley with our new History Trail
Step back in time this summer with our free History Trail and discover Caterham Valley like never before.
Whether you’re eight or eighty, exploring with your grandchildren, catching up with friends, looking for a family adventure, or wanting something different to do over the summer holidays, the Caterham Valley History Trail is the perfect way to spend a few hours together – whether that’s a single sunny afternoon, or spread out over several days.
Running from 18th July to 31st August, this fun, interactive trail invites you to step back in time as you uncover the fascinating people, places and objects that have shaped our town. It’s a chance to explore Caterham Valley from a whole new perspective while discovering the local businesses that make it so special today.
In partnership with the East Surrey Museum, we’ve hidden 20 fascinating artefacts from the local area around town. From beautiful vintage jewellery to Victorian sewing machines, every stop reveals a piece of history waiting to be discovered.
Pick up your FREE trail sheet from either the East Surrey Museum, the Post Office or Caterham Valley Library, or download a copy below. Follow the stars on the map to track down each artefact and uncover the stories behind them.
As you make your way around the trail, why not make a day of it? Stop for a coffee, enjoy lunch, browse our shops and discover some of the fantastic local businesses that make Caterham Valley such a great place to visit.
The trail has been designed for everyone. Bring the children, invite the grandparents, challenge your friends, enjoy a date with a difference, or team up with classmates during the holidays. At every location you’ll find information about the artefact, along with a question for adults and one for children.
Once you’ve completed your trail sheet, simply return it to the East Surrey Museum, the Post Office or Caterham Valley Library. Submit your completed trail sheet on or before 1st September and you’ll be entered into our prize draw for the chance to win vouchers to spend in Caterham Valley.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have lived in Caterham for years, the History Trail is a chance to see the town through fresh eyes. Discover hidden stories from local businesses, enjoy great places to eat, socialise and shop, and make lasting memories with family and friends this summer.
