NEWS: The Meghan Effect

Fresh from the royal wedding, Caterham Valley For You catches up with the owner of Time Hair & Beauty, Katherine Casey-Farmer, to see what she thought of Meghan’s hairstyle – and how we can recreate it ourselves

While the build-up to the royal wedding was all about what the dress would be like, in the event, it was Meghan Markle’s 1930s diamond tiara, accompanied by a 16ft silk veil, that turned out to be the showpiece of the ensemble.

“The elegant tiara, which once belonged to Queen Mary, was just stunning,” says Katherine Casey-Farmer, owner and consultant stylist at Time Hair & Beauty. “It gave a lovely Art-Deco twist to her otherwise very simple style of dress. Her hair too was very understated and set off the show-stopping tiara and veil perfectly.”

For her hairstyle, reportedly created by New York stylist Serge Normant, Meghan opted for a variation on her signature chignon – with a series of coils pinned along the back of her head offset by soft tendrils tucked behind her ears. This resulted in something of a Twitter storm when several pieces fell in front of her face. However, Katherine thinks this all unfolded exactly as intended.

“The loose tendrils of hair helped to soften what would otherwise have been a fairly severe style,” says Katherine. “It gave her a natural, effortless look, which was also reflected in her simple, understated make-up, and completed the look perfectly.”

Wedding looks

For anyone who wants to create the hairstyle for their own wedding, Katherine says that she would use a volumising shampoo and conditioner, to avoid weighing the hair down, finished with a soft-hold mousse. Then she says it’s a simple case of parting the hair down the middle, pinning it underneath and finishing with coiled hairpieces at the back.

And for any wedding guests out there, Katherine recommends either the long flowing locks of Amal Clooney or the more formal ‘up’ do of Zara Tindall.

“The other great look for this season, as sported by everyone from Carey Mulligan and Fearne Cotton to Mila Kunis, is the blunt bob,” adds Katherine. “Perfect for summer, this is a look that also works for everyone – whether you have a wedding to go to or not.”
