The Story Behind Caterham Valley’s Beautiful Bridal Shop
Helena Fortley is a beautiful bridal shop in the heart of Caterham Valley, with a hand-picked range of wedding dresses selected for their elegance, style, and exceptional quality. Inspired by a bittersweet personal experience, Sally Brady founded Helena Fortley with a strong belief that a bride’s pursuit of The Dress should be a truly memorable experience – one that’s relaxed, exciting, and magical. Last week, we sat down with Sally to learn all about why she got started in the wedding dress business, her close-knit team, her designers, and her exciting plans for the future.
How did Helena Fortley come to be?
I fell into the wedding dress business because of my own wedding. I went to a few shops and it wasn’t the best experience – there were some unpleasant salespeople, often not very nice about a woman’s figure. But when you find your dress, it’s just amazing, as long as you have lovely people with you. I fell in love with weddings.
Sadly, my mum died shortly before my own wedding; the last thing we did together was get my dress. We really enjoyed it. She left me a bit of money, and I thought I’d give it a go – and here we are all these years later.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your team
There’s myself and my daughter, when she’s not at university. I’ve got two seamstresses who do all the alterations, and also my Saturday girl. During the week, we see one party at a time, and at weekends, we host two parties at a time, as we have two changing rooms downstairs.
My daughter has worked alongside me since day one. She does all the social media work – she’s twenty, so she’s into all of that. I’ve learnt from her that people prefer it when you’re less serious and professional on social media. She and my Saturday girl create some fun content for our socials. She’s only got six months left at university, then we will see what she wants to do.
Why did you choose to set up your bridal shop in Caterham Valley?
I lived on the Hill for eight years, and my daughter went to Essendene School, so I know the area well. It’s right next to the M25, it’s next to Gatwick – for international brides – and it’s not far from London. It was the perfect location, really. People will come from miles for the perfect dress – I’ve had customers from Scotland, Jersey, Guernsey, even as far as Dubai and Lebanon. Many girls will find a dress, then find out where that designer is stocked, and visit that shop.

Tell us a bit about the designers you stock
I have six designers. In the business, you go to trade shows every year, which teaches you what’s coming up and what the trends are. You have to pick from the new collections based on what you like and what you think will sell in your shop. There’s been a massive learning curve. You can’t just pick what you like. You have to think about covering everything, for example, what someone in their twenties would want compared to someone my age.
I’ve changed a lot over the years, but I am currently settled on six designers – I’ve had most of them for a while now. There’s the Australian brand Stella York, Enzoani, Luna Novias (part of the Rosa Clara group), Tania Olson, and Freda Bennet.
What made you choose these designers for your bridal shop?
I wanted to cover all aspects of what our customers will want. I really wanted an English brand, but a lot of them are too expensive. This is why I was drawn to Freda Bennet. Freda is a good price, and they also do beautiful claim classic designs. Stella York is very fun, it’s on-trend, and perfect for girls. Enzoani is my higher-end designer, perfect for people who want more detail in their dress. Tania Olson is our lower-price range, with many beautiful dresses starting from around £1,000. It’s the newest addition to our range here at Helena Fortley.

Being in the wedding dress business, what are your observations on love?
When it works, it’s amazing! To see the girls light up, with their whole lives ahead of them. Because it’s a small town with a close community, I see them walking past, sometimes with their new babies. Just this weekend, a girl I did about eight years ago now stopped to say hi with her six-year-old and four-year-old. Seeing that side of things really warms your heart – it’s lovely.
Because it’s a small town, I get to see a lot of the same family groups and a lot of familiar faces. I’ll do their cousin, or their sister. If I walk around Caterham Valley, I know lots of people through my business. I’ll smile at every woman I see, just in case I’ve helped them choose their dress!
What is it like when they find their perfect dress?
It’s a massive buzz. You’re really happy for them, because they’ve got the dress, and it’s really emotional – they’re crying, mum’s crying, and it’s lovely. Then, equally, you feel really good, because you chose that dress and stocked it and it’s worked.
We have an hour and a half appointment. Before they come in, I ask a load of questions and ask them to select five dresses from the website so I can get an idea of what they want. They come in and try those on, and I’ll take bits from those five and try to find what I think they’d like. Most people don’t walk around; they’ll wait for you to bring options to them.
They pick the dress, and then they try it on and pay the balance. And then we start alterations eight weeks before the wedding. We have an 8-week fit, a 4-week fit, and then just before the wedding. It’s quite a long process. Sometimes, brides can come and start dress shopping eighteen months before a wedding. But more and more of late, brides are leaving it, so we are selling a lot of sample dresses. The whole process can take between four and six months.

What do you love most about what you do?
The people. I love dealing with people. It’s a lovely atmosphere. It’s someone’s dream dress and their magical day. No other dress a girl is going to buy is this important.
Do you have any news or plans for the future?
In an ideal world, I’d knock through to next door and have that as a mother of the bride/prom dress area, but that’s a dream for the future.
Most people don’t realise that we also stock dresses for bridesmaids and flower girls, and we also do prom dresses. They are more of the plain, fitted, or A-line dresses rather than the glitzy beaded ones, and they’re around £100-250 in price. We have loads of different colours and around 45 different styles!
We’re also having our website rebuilt, so keep an eye out for our new site, coming very soon.
